Talk Abstract:
Data is one of exploration’s key assets and the driving force behind our differentiating capability at BHP Exploration. Rapid access to high quality, metadata-rich geoscience data provides the foundation for advanced analytics and data science. This session will provide an overview of the top data challenges we see at BHP Exploration and provides an overview on how BHP is addressing its data challenges by leveraging the Open Subsurface Data Universe (OSDU) platform and framework. The presentation will explore the latest data advancements related to open shared standards and the potential for collective benefits across the sector with practical next steps on how data providers, software vendors, mining operators, government and research organizations can collaborate to mitigate our industry’s biggest data challenges.
Speaker Bio:
Kanita is Manager of Data Capability & Systems for the Exploration Excellence & Innovation team at BHP, based in Toronto, Canada. Kanita leads a global team of data professionals and geoscientists with responsibility for designing and implementing BHP Exploration’s Data Vision. Kanita joined BHP in in 2022 where she has spearheaded multiple large scale projects on developing data governance protocols and state-of-the-art data platforms for BHP’s vast geoscience datasets.
Kanita has formerly held Geophysicist and Project Manager roles with Seequent (Bentley), Geotech Airborne Ltd, ESG Solutions and Teranga Gold Corporation. Kanita brings a diverse background and knowledge of geology, geophysics, technology, and data applied to both mining and petroleum industries.
Kanita was the President (2022-2023) and executive member of the Canadian Exploration Geophysics Society (2021-2024). Kanita currently sits on the PGO Geophysics Committee.
