Conor Grieve

Managing Consultant, ERM

Talk Abstract:

Sustainability has become an essential component of the mining industry with heightened stakeholder expectations to embed these concepts within a business model - exploration through to closure, and corporate activities. As such, mining companies are setting targets, enhancing their disclosure, marketing their sustainability credentials, engaging with the ecosystem to improve performance, and increasingly competing on the basis of sustainability in the market. Despite this, mining companies still struggle with managing ESG issues and converting lofty corporate rhetoric into action at operations. With this challenge, mining companies face challenges in developing assets and maintaining license to operate, which influence the ability of these companies to bring critical minerals to market. This talk will provide a brief overview of what ESG means in mining, what opportunities may be present and key considerations for companies in responding to these challenges.
