Dr. Laura Katz, P.Geo., Geologist, IAMGOLD Corp.
Speaker Biography:
Laura Katz received a B.Sc. Honours degree from Carleton University in 2011 and a Ph.D. in Mineral Deposits and Precambrian Geology degree from Laurentian University in 2016. Her graduate research focused on the petrology, geochemistry, U-Pb and Re-Os geochronology, alteration, mineralization and deposit classification of the Côté Gold deposit. She has worked at IAMGOLD Corporation from 2016 to present as a Geologist, exploring for intrusion-related and orogenic gold deposits in Ontario and high-sulfidation gold deposits in Peru.
Talk Abstract:
The Archean intrusion-related, low-grade (<1g/t Au), large-tonnage (355.4 Mt @ 0.87 g/t Au) Côté Gold Au(-Cu) deposit, located in the Swayze greenstone belt (SGB), Ontario, Canada is the first large gold deposit to be discovered in the SGB and defines a new gold metallogenic event in the gold-rich Abitibi Subprovince. The deposit is hosted by the Chester intrusive complex, a ca. 2741 to 2739 Ma low-Al composite, subvolcanic intrusion composed of tonalite, quartz diorite and diorite with mineralization centered on a diorite breccia and magmatic-hydrothermal biotite breccia body. The mineralized zone, currently constrained to 1200 m in length by 600 m in width and to a depth exceeding 500 m, is represented by several hydrothermal stages. The presentation will cover the geology, petrology, geochronology and the nature of alteration and mineralization, as well as the present genetic model for the deposit.
