From Sadiola to the recently discovered Boto Gold Deposit, 25 years of gold mining and exploration discovery in West Africa

Craig MacDougall, Senior Vice President of Exploration, IAMGOLD

The discovery and subsequent development of the Sadiola gold deposit twenty years ago in Mali was a company maker event for IAMGOLD.  The deposit has now produced over 7.5 Moz and contains further resources within an underlying sulphide deposit yet to be exploited.  Underpinned by this initial success, IAMGOLD has continued to grow its foot print in West Africa through timely acquisitions, such as the Essakane deposit in Burkina Faso, as well as through sustained exploration resulting in the next discoveries at the Boto Gold deposit in Senegal and more recently the Diakha prospect in Mali.

Craig MacDougall
has been an exploration geologist for nearly 30 years starting his career in Newfoundland with Noranda Exploration.  Over the next 20 years with the Noranda-Falconbridge group he advanced to hold various senior management roles within exploration, leading programs and project evaluations for gold, Cu, Pb-Zn and Ni sulphides dominantly in Canada, Australia, Papua New and East and Southern Africa.  With the takeover of Falconbridge by Xstrata in 2006, he transitioned into the junior industry as CEO for TSXV listed Continental Nickel principally exploring in Tanzania.  In 2012, he joined IAMGOLD and currently holds the position of SVP, Exploration with oversight for their global exploration program conducting both near mine and greenfield programs in nine countries in the Americas and West Africa.

Mr. MacDougall holds a M Sc in Earth Sciences from Memorial University of Newfoundland and a B Sc in Geology from Mount Allison University in New Brunswick.
